Is AIDS Still an Urgent Global Health Crisis?

Yes. Nearly 37 million people are living with HIV worldwide.

In 2017, an estimated 1.8 million people became newly infected with HIV. That’s almost 5,000 every day—and 200 every hour.

In some 50 countries of the world, new HIV infections are increasing.

In 2017, approximately 15.2 million people did not have access to lifesaving antiretroviral therapy.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 77.3 million people have contracted HIV and 35.4 million people have died of AIDS-related illnesses.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 17 million children have lost one or both parents to AIDS.
